It is not as simple as you may think as there are many paths that lead to the same target... It is a
lengthy drive and if you can choose to leave early to give yourself time to stop here and there that
would be a nice segment to your trip.
Similar to being in this area of the island, there are literally hundreds of things to do and see.
About every half mile or so there would be a possible adventure!
We are going to approach this as if you were coming from Volcanoes National Park.
Volcanoes National Park is from Hilo, 30 miles, southwest on Highway 11 (a 45 minute drive). If
you have never been to Hilo, it might be logical to reverse this and go to Hilo from Volcano.
Volcanoes National Park is from Kailua-Kona, 96 miles, southwest on Highway 11 (2 to 2/12 hour
drive).
An alternative route would be thru Waimea and Hilo, 125 miles, via highways 19 and 11 (2 1/2 to
3 hour drive)
For more exact plotting, use a service like http://maps.google.com. Type in your departure
address and the destination address. The address at the house in Kailua-Kona is: 74-1496 Hao
Kuni, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740.
Here is a blow by blow when you arrive at Kailua-Kona for the short route of 96 miles via Highway
11...Highway 11 is also known as Mamalahoa Highway...
When you come into Kailua Town, you should see on your right the Lowes store and usually most
people notice the big rock wall and below the Borders. This is Henry Street. Turn right at that
corner where Borders is onto Henry from Highway 11.
Proceed up the hill in the right hand lane to the 2nd traffic light. That second traffic light intersects
Henry with Palani Rd.
Turn right onto Palani Rd from Henry Street.
Pay attention the the mile marker signs. Also note that on the bottoms of street signs the
upcoming streets are announced prior to coming to them.
At mile marker 36, Hao Kuni will be on the left. The street sign will announce it before you get to
the intersection.
Turn left onto Hao Kuni from Palani Rd.
Continue down the hill. There will be two fire hydrants that are also marked in the middle of the
road with blue reflectors. We are right after the second fire hydrant, or about 5 houses down on
the left from the intersection of Palani Rd.
There are 5 giant fan shaped palms on the edge of rock outer wall that faces the street. The
house is a grayish blue with white trim and you will see a circle drive to the leftward front and a
cement driveway to the rightward front. There is a white fence that separates the front of the
house from the frontward yard to the left. Drive straight in and park.
